A family is voicing its displeasure with the First Student Canada transportation service after their son was dropped off in the middle of a rural road yesterday (Wednesday).
Kris Carr, whose son Corbin is a second-grade student at Blackburn Elementary School, is calling the whole situation “unacceptable”.
Carr says he normally picks up Corbin at a neighbor’s house at 2:40 pm but to make matters worse, was later told to go to the fire hall a kilometre away, where the bus his son was supposed to be on didn’t stop.
“And then I am freaking out, why hasn’t he stopped? So I called my shop where I work out of my home and get one of the guys to go out and look at the old bus stop. He tells me no student has come out but the bus just went past and didn’t stop. So that makes me even more worried and then the bus passes me again going the other way.”
“As a parent, I find this incredibly irresponsible. You are going to drop a seven-year-old kid off in the middle of a country road with a high-speed limit (80 km/hr) and notable wildlife sightings and expect him to just make his way home? He had no idea what was happening, he was scared, we were scared and my wife is panicking. We are thinking about pulling him out of school altogether. This is just ridiculous,” added Carr.
He further explained to MyPGNow.com that their family plans to take this issue right to the very top.
“My wife is contacting the MLA and the school board. This is unacceptable we expect these people to be responsible with our children, we put them in their care and that is not an unreasonable expectation. You are handling someone else’s kids.”
SD 57 awarded the contract to First Student in June, ending their long-standing partnership with Diversified Transportation.
Assistant Superintendent Lee Karpenko told MyPGNow.com on Wednesday that he expects all buses to be on-time by Monday.
