The Prince George Firefighter Charitable Society was created in late 2021 to give back to the city’s community.
Their goal is to support burn victims and residents that have other medical issues, as well as their families who may be faced with financial challenges.
The first big partnership they made was with Northern Lights Estate Winery and Crossroads Brewing, who both created special products to help the charity.
Every purchase of Cinders Rye Ale and Ember Red Current will have $1 donated to the Firefighter Charitable Society.
This initiative raised $1,500.
Daryl Leiski, the owner of Crossroads Brewing, said they were approached by the winery about the initiative.
“It was a short production. Next year, we are planning to double that” he said.
Leiski also thanked Prince George, saying “the public is really where the big support was. The product was in the stores for just weeks before it sold out.”
Northern Lights’ Owner Doug Bell said the pilot program “was a resounding success and we are excited to announce in 2023 we will be expanding the program substantially to raise significantly more money for this charity,” adding that “supporting the community is our central mission.”
Jason Geddes, a Sr Board Member of the Firefighter Charitable Society, was very thankful for the aid from the local businesses, and he says the money raised will be kept local.
“Typically when you fundraise for muscular dystrophy it tends to leave town and head out to the main organization. We are looking to change that and keep as much as we can local.”
Geddes says this is the Charitable Society’s first venture, and that they are focusing on families who are dealing with muscular dystrophy, helping kids get to Vancouver for hospital treatment, and some lunch programs within the city.
The concrete plan on how they will achieve this is still under construction.
There is still Cinders Red Ale on tap at Crossroads, and Ember Red Current at the Winery for sale.
