Canada West Soccer:

The UNBC women are 2-2 on the season and will play at MacEwan Saturday and Alberta Sunday with both games to start at 11 a.m. PT.

(Men) in Kamloops

The (2-3-1) UNBC men’s soccer team will play at Alberta Friday night (4:00 PT) and at Lethbridge Sunday afternoon (1:15 PT).

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars split their two-weekend exhibition games in Port Coquitlam.

The Cougars beat the Vancouver Giants 4-2 Friday before dropping a 5-2 decision to the Victoria Royals on Saturday.

The Cougars play their final two preseason games against the Blazers: Friday in Kamloops and Saturday in PG at CN Centre.

Prince George went into the weekend carrying a roster of 30 players: three goalies, eight defencemen, and 19 forwards.

The regular season opens for the Cougars on Friday, September 23rd when they host the Tri-City Americans.

The PG Cougars have hired Carter Rigby as an assistant coach.

The 28-year-old Rigby, a former WHL player, spent the last three seasons as Head Coach of the Osoyoos Coyotes of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL).

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings play three preseason games this week, with two of them on home ice at the PG Coliseum.

The Spruce Kings host the Merritt Centennials on Wednesday and the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Thursday before they play their final exhibition game on Saturday in Salmon Arm.

The Spruce Kings lost their preseason opener, 6-5 in Merritt on Thursday.

They open their regular season on the road, Friday, September 23rd at Coquitlam.

The (1-5) PG Kodiaks visit the (2-4) Kamloops Broncos Saturday night at 6:00.

NFL: (Sunday night game)

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott will have surgery on his right thumb and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

Monday Night Football to conclude the first week of the NFL season has the Denver Broncos at the Seattle Seahawks (5:20) as Broncos QB Russell Wilson plays against his former team.

CFL:

The B.C. Lions, coming off Friday’s 31-10 loss in Montreal, play their next two games against the Stampeders: Saturday at 4:00 PM (PT) in Calgary and the following Saturday, September 24th (7:00) in Vancouver.

After 14 weeks of the season, the (8-3) Lions are tied with the (8-4) Stampeders for second in the West Division, although B.C. has played one fewer game.

Week 15 starts Friday night at 6:30 (PT) with (3-10) Edmonton at (6-7) Saskatchewan.

MLB:

Texas Rangers  4  Toronto Blue Jays  1

The Blue Jays went 8-2 on a 10-game road trip.

Toronto will host Tampa Bay in a five-game series starting tonight (Monday 4:07 PT).

With 23 games left, the (78-61) Blue Jays are holding down the third and final wild-card spot in the American League just 1/2 a game behind Tampa Bay and Seattle.

Toronto is 5 1/2 games ahead of Baltimore for the last wild-card berth.

Tennis:

Carlos Alcaraz of Spain has his first Grand Slam title at age 19 after winning the U.S. Open.

The third-seeded Alcaraz beat Casper Ruud of Norway in four sets (6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3) on Sunday as he became the youngest man to be ranked No. 1.

Earlier, top-seeded Iga Swiatek got by #5 Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 in the women’s final on Saturday.
