The 850 km ride to Williams Lake over the course of a week will be aiming to raise funds for children and families living with cancer.
Stacey Osiowy, a 9-1-1 dispatcher in Prince George is riding in the Tour de North for the first time this year.
“It’s something I’ve always been interested in, kind of like a bucket list item,” Osiowy said.
“A couple of years ago, I lost a cousin to cancer at the age of two, and I just watched what it did to my family, and to her parents, and sister, the experience they went through, and so it hit a lot closer to home for me.”
Osiowy said she’s quite new to cycling, with one previous season of cycling 13 years ago.
“This is the most intense training I’ve ever done,” she explained.
“We have some great coaches on our team that gave us workouts and schedules to try and stick to, milestones that we had to hit. I managed to get in about 2,500 training kilometres over the past few months.”
Osiowy added their planned route has been altered due to wildfire concerns around Hudson’s Hope.
“It’s definitely a very fluid situation,” Osiowy said.
“There’s a lot of smoke in the area right now, we’re hoping some of that clears, but we’re going to figure it out and have a great ride.”
This year marks the 21st Cops for Cancer Tour de North.
Tour de North has raised over $3.5 million for children and families living with cancer over the last two decades.
