NHL:

Colorado Avalanche sniper Nathan MacKinnon will become the highest-paid player in the NHL.

The Avs and MacKinnon have agreed to an eight-year extension worth $12.6 million annually, surpassing Connor McDavid’s $12.5 million.

MacKinnon’s $100.8 million total deal will not begin until the 2023-24 season.

Former PG Cougars defenceman Zdeno Chara has retired after playing 24 seasons in the NHL.

The 45-year-old Chara was selected in the 3rd round (56th overall) by the New York Islanders in the 1996 NHL Draft.

 

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars start their regular season with home games against the Tri-City Americans Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday night at 6:00.

The Cougars posted a 3-1 record in the preseason.

BCHL: 

The Prince George Spruce Kings begin their regular season on the road.

The Spruce Kings, who went 1-3 in the pre-season, visit Coquitlam Friday and Langley Saturday before hosting Vernon on September 30th and October 1st.

NFL: (Final two games in Week 2)

Philadelphia  24  Minnesota  7

Buffalo  41  Tennessee  7

Philadelphia and Buffalo are among six teams that have started the season 2-0.

The others are Miami, Kansas City, New York Giants, and Tampa Bay.

The five teams 0-2 are Tennessee, Las Vegas, Cincinnati, Carolina, and Atlanta.

(Both Indianapolis and Houston are winless at 0-1-1)

CFL:

The B.C. Lions host the Calgary Stampeders Saturday night at 7:00.

The (9-3) Lions are second in the West Division, six points behind (12-2) Winnipeg and two ahead of (8-5) Calgary.

Week 16 of the CFL season starts Friday night (4:30 PT) with (4-9) Hamilton at (5-7) Montreal.

Winnipeg is idle this week.

BC Football Conference:

The (1-6) Prince George Kodiaks host the (3-4) Kamloops Broncos Saturday night at 7:00 at Masich Place Stadium in the BC Football Conference.

The Broncos whipped the Kodiaks 47-17 last Saturday (Sept 17) in Kamloops.

MLB:

The Toronto Blue Jays have just 15 games left in their regular season.

The (83-64) Jays visit the (80-66) Philadelphia Phillies today and Wednesday (3:45 PM PT).

Toronto leads the American League Wild Card standings by a game over Tampa Bay and by 1 1/2 over Seattle.

All three teams are likely to make the playoffs.

Jared Young of Prince George did not play in the Chicago Cubs’ 10-3 Monday loss to the Marlins in Miami.

In three games with the Cubs since his call up from Triple-A Iowa, the 27-year-old Young is batting .222, going 2-for-9 with a walk.

 

Canada West Soccer:

The (3-4-1) UNBC Timberwolves host (1-4-2) Saskatchewan Friday night at 5:00 and (2-2-3) MacEwan Sunday at noon in Canada West men’s soccer.

The UNBC men are coming off Sunday’s 5-0 victory in Lethbridge where striker Michael Henman notched his third hat trick of the season.

The (2-3-1) UNBC women’s soccer team is also home this weekend at Masich Place Stadium.

They host (7-0) UBC Friday night at 7:15 and (2-4-1) Victoria Sunday afternoon at 2:15.

The UNBC women are fresh off a 2-2 tie against Alberta in Edmonton.
