MLB:

The same teams play again today (Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. PT) in Philly.

The (84-64) Jays, with just 14 regular season games left, lead the American League Wild Card standings and are second in the A.L East, 5 1/2 games behind the NY Yankees.

Jared Young of Prince George was the DH and went 1-for-4 at the plate in the Chicago Cubs’ 2-1 Tuesday victory over the Marlins in Miami.

In four games with the Cubs since his call-up from Triple-A Iowa, the 27-year-old Young is batting .231, going 3-for-13 with a walk.

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge joined an exclusive club when he hit his 60th home run of the season in a 9-8 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates last night (Tuesday).

The All-Star outfielder tied Babe Ruth for eighth place on the single-season home run list and is now one home run shy of tying Roger Maris’ American League single-season record of 61 home runs, set in 1961, which also stood as the major league mark for 37 years.

 

NHL:

Colorado Avalanche sniper Nathan MacKinnon will become the highest-paid player in the NHL.

The Avs and MacKinnon have agreed to an eight-year extension worth $12.6 million annually, surpassing Connor McDavid’s $12.5 million.

MacKinnon’s $100.8 million total deal will not begin until the 2023-24 season.

Former PG Cougars defenceman Zdeno Chara has retired after playing 24 seasons in the NHL.

The 45-year-old Chara was selected in the 3rd round (56th overall) by the New York Islanders in the 1996 NHL Draft.

 

Defenceman P.K. Subban announced his retirement at the age of 33.

Subban played 13 seasons in the NHL with Montreal, Nashville, and New Jersey.

 

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars start their regular season with home games against the Tri-City Americans Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday night at 6:00.

The Cougars posted a 3-1 record in the preseason.

BCHL: 

The Prince George Spruce Kings begin their regular season on the road.

The Spruce Kings, who went 1-3 in the pre-season, visit the Coquitlam Express Friday and the Langley Rivermen Saturday before hosting the Vernon Vipers on September 30th and October 1st.

NFL:

Week 3 of the NFL season kicks off Thursday night (5:15 PT) with Pittsburgh at Cleveland.

Both the Steelers and the Browns are 1-1 in the AFC North.

There are six NFL teams off to a 2-0 start.

They are Buffalo, Miami, Kansas City, Philadelphia, New York Giants, and Tampa Bay.

The five teams that sit 0-2 are Tennessee, Las Vegas, Cincinnati, Carolina, and Atlanta.

(Both Indianapolis and Houston are winless at 0-1-1)

CFL:

The B.C. Lions host the Calgary Stampeders Saturday night at 7:00.

The (9-3) Lions are second in the West Division, six points behind (12-2) Winnipeg and two ahead of (8-5) Calgary.

Week 16 of the CFL season starts Friday night (4:30 PT) with (4-9) Hamilton at (5-7) Montreal.

Winnipeg is idle this week.

BC Football Conference:

The (1-6) Prince George Kodiaks host the (3-4) Kamloops Broncos Saturday night at 7:00 at Masich Place Stadium in the BC Football Conference.

The Broncos whipped the Kodiaks 47-17 last Saturday (Sept 17) in Kamloops.

Canada West Soccer:

The UNBC Timberwolves are home this weekend at Masich Place Stadium in Canada West men’s and women’s soccer.

The (3-4-1) UNBC men host (1-4-2) Saskatchewan Friday night at 5:00 and (2-2-3) MacEwan Sunday at noon.

The (2-3-1) UNBC women entertain (7-0) UBC Friday night at 7:15 and (2-4-1) Victoria Sunday afternoon at 2:15.
