Prince George Coliseum will be named “Kopar Memorial Arena”

The City of Prince George has found a new name for the Coliseum.

At tonight’s (Wednesday) City Council meeting, Council voted to authorize the city to enter into a naming rights agreement with Kopar Administration Ltd.

“It was actually the Spruce Kings that approached us with this particular opportunity,” Director of Recreation and Events, Andy Beesley explained.

“We did the proper process and put it out for an expression of interest just to check to see what other sorts of interest there were. As it turned out, Kopar was the only one that put in a submission.”

Kopar will pay the city $15,000 per year over a four-year period for the naming rights.

“I think the City’s been engaging with more businesses over the last few years to pursue naming right opportunities,” said Councillor Kyle Sampson.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for local businesses like Kopar, but also for the city to generate revenue.”

There is also a clause in the contract that allows either party to terminate the agreement on written notice if the facility becomes too damaged to use for the purposes of an ice hockey arena.

In that case, Kopar will be entitled to a pro-rata reimbursement of that portion of any annual installment payment provided to the city.

“I think that’s just really important so that Kopar isn’t taking on unnecessary risk,” said Councillor Cori Ramsay.

“We know that that facility is on its last leg, I question what that facility will look like in four years.”

The motion was carried unanimously 8-0. (Councillor Murry Krause was away)

Other items discussed at the meeting included a potential new subdivision on North Nechako Road, and a plaque was given to the City by the Lheidli T’enneh.
