Theatre Northwest’s third stage reading of the season will be quite unlike the previous two.
Sisters will be performed live on stage, it is an “uncompromising look at a convent-run Indian residential school” according to the theatre.
The play is a memory of one nun’s time in a 60’s residential school. Based on the subject matter, there is a lot of outdated language and content that the theatre says the audience should be aware of before coming in.
“I hope it inspires discussion. I hope someone in the audience picks up the 94 calls to action and takes a look through them at the end” said Anna Russel, the director of the stage read.
“We have all worked really hard to put this together in a sensitive way” she said.
“It is humbling” said Gil Botelho, one of the actors in the production. “It isn’t your run of the mill comedy or drama, it is a pretty deep subject and I am just hoping we can do it justice and bring this to light in a proper way, that will educate people without offending anyone.”
The proceeds from the reading, which will be done on Truth and Reconciliation Day (September 30), will all be going to the residential school survivors society.
