The Vancouver Canucks open their season on the road tonight (Wednesday 7:00 PT) against the Oilers in Edmonton.

The Canucks went 2-3-2 in seven preseason games.

Hockey Canada:

There’s a major shakeup at Hockey Canada.

The sport’s governing body has announced Chief Executive Officer Scott Smith is leaving the position immediately while the entire board has also agreed to step down.

The moves follow several high-profile sponsors dropping their support for the organization over its handling of sexual assault investigations involving members of the 2003 and 2018 men’s national junior teams.

Hockey Canada says an interim management committee will be put in place until a newly constituted board appoints a new CEO.

 

WHL:

The (3-3) Prince George Cougars play the first of two home games this week against an East Division opponent when they entertain the (2-2-1) Brandon Wheat Kings tonight at 7:00.

The Wheat Kings began their 8-game road trip with a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen Monday.

The Cougars will also host the Winnipeg Ice Saturday night at 6:00.

BCHL: 

The Prince George Spruce Kings are off to a 5-1 start, which is the second-best record in the BCHL Interior Division behind the 6-0 Penticton Vees.

The Spruce Kings visit the (3-3) Vernon Vipers Friday night at 7:00 and the (3-3) Salmon Arm Silverbacks Saturday night at 6:00.

BC Elite Hockey League: (BCEHL)

The (2-2) U18 Cariboo Cougars host the (1-4-0-1) Thompson Blazers Saturday afternoon at 2:30 and Sunday morning at 8:15 at Kin 1.

The (1-6-1) U18 female Northern Capitals are off until they host the winless Greater Vancouver Comets on October 21st (6:45 p.m. Kin 1), October 22nd (5:45 p.m. Kin 2), and October 23rd (8:30 a.m. Kin 2).

With his team trailing 7-5, Yordan Alvarez belted a game-ending, three-run homer for the Astros with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Game two will be played Thursday afternoon (12:37 PT) in Houston.

Game two will go at Yankee Stadium Thursday night (4:37 PT).

Game two is set for this afternoon (1:35 PT) in Atlanta.

Canada West Soccer:

The UNBC Timberwolves conclude their regular season in Canada West women’s soccer with a pair of home games this weekend at Masich Place Stadium.

The UNBC women entertain (5-5-2) Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Friday night at 6:00 and (3-6-3) UBC Okanagan (UBCO) Sunday at 2:15.

The (4-5-3) UNBC women are fifth out of eight teams in the Pacific Division.

The top five teams qualify for the playoffs.

The UNBC men’s soccer team also has home games this weekend.

They entertain (4-4-3) UBCO Saturday and Sunday at noon before concluding their regular season on the road at (5-4-2) Fraser Valley on Oct 21st and 23rd.

The (6-4-2) UNBC men are in third place out of seven teams in Pacific Division.

The top four advance to the playoffs.

NFL:

Week six of the NFL season begins Thursday night with (1-4) Washington at (2-3) Chicago.

After five weeks, Philadelphia is 5-0 while Dallas, New York Giants, Minnesota, Buffalo, and Kansas City are all 4-1.

There are eight teams at 3-2.

CFL:

The B.C. Lions and the Calgary Stampeders are tied for second in the CFL West Division, both with records of 10-5, although B.C. holds the tie-breaker.

The Lions host the (14-2) Winnipeg Blue Bombers Saturday night at 7:00.

The Blue Bombers have already clinched first place.

(The Lions also visit Edmonton on October 21st and play at Winnipeg on October 28th).

The Stampeders entertain the (5-10) Hamilton Tiger-Cats Friday night (6:30 PT).

The Tiger-Cats are two points behind (6-10) Saskatchewan in the battle for the last playoff spot.

(The Stampeders’ final two games are a home-and-home with Saskatchewan starting on October 22nd in Regina and concluding on October 29th in Calgary)

Week 19 of the CFL season begins Friday (4:00 PT) with (7-8) Montreal at (4-11) Ottawa.

BC Football Conference:

The Prince George Kodiaks finished with a 1-9 record and a tie for last place in their first season in the BC Football Conference.

The Kodiaks lost 54-7 to the (10-0) Okanagan Sun in their final game on Saturday at Masich Place Stadium.
