Cathy Fortin wants to bring different perspective to school board

Cathy Fortin has worked as a weather observer, forester, and owner and operator for PG Taxi.

A resident of Prince George since 1986, Fortin is now retired.

“I’m not an academic person, which is different for a school board, and I think that my perspective is different than others, and so I hope to use fresh eyes to view the problems that we’re having in our school district,” she said.

Fortin said the main driving factor in her run to become a school board trustee is Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) in the curriculum.

“It’s sex education and I think it’s it very inappropriate at the ages they’re doing it,” she said.

“From what I understand, it’s inappropriate ages, inappropriate information, and the whole reason I’m running is to try and do something about that.”

Fortin added she would like to see anti-bullying and anti-racist programs removed, because they backfire.

“What we need to do is develop an atmosphere of kindness and inclusivity, and quit emphasizing the differences and everybody just accept each other for who they are,” she explained.

Fortin said the graduation rate needs to be improved, and to do that, expectations need to be raised.

“That’s the reason children are failing, we’re coddling them, and we don’t have the expectations for them. If we raise our expectations they will rise to meet our expectations,” she said.

“We need to have more power back in the hands of the teachers and the students and the parents. They need to quit being dictated to as to the curriculum and how they’re going to teach and what they’re going to teach.”

The School District Elections, along with the Municipal Election, will take place on Saturday, October 15th.
