Downtown, transparency, and food security on Karm Manhas’ City Council platform

Kaiten Mixed Martial Art Academy owner Karm Manhas is seeking a seat on Prince George City Council.

He said he’s also organized many community events, including the  Prince George Bike festival that happened this Summer.

“I got motivated to get into this because I am a father and a downtown business owner,” Manhas said.

“I just ran across some information that was just shocking to me, I figured, I’ve got to get in there to fix this.”

Manhas said the downtown situation is one of the issues important to him.

“There’s been no reliable toilet access for four years,” he said.

“I’ve been doing a survey with both the homeless and the downtown community. The homeless lost their social services after covid and never got re-done, but Northern Health kind of left them with nothing.”

Manhas said he’s looking for a solution that works for both the homeless and and the businesses downtown.

“I believe we have the same goal, we want to get these people housed,” he explained.

“Once they’re housed in proper treatment centres and everything, start to triage them.”

He said the crime downtown is also an issue that needs to be dealt with.

He added he wants to bring transparency and accountability back to city hall.

“I have this report that was given that has 1,989 calls to action over four years,” he said.

“It’s just shocking how much the group moves into lockstep, and that’s what I’ve been campaigning on the whole time, is that I will be that person to speak out. You have to have diversity of voices, that is called democracy, it’s not moving in one lockstep.”

He’s also running on food security and democracy.

“I believe that will work into our local economy as well,” he explained.

“It does two things at once as a core life important thing for us as food prices are going to be soaring here due to various reasons.”

The municipal election will take place on October 15th.
