New Prince George Mayor Simon Yu ‘humbled by overwhelming support in the community’

“A complete shock for the size of the win I received.”

That was the reaction of Prince George’s new Mayor Simon Yu to his win in last night’s municipal election.

“I know I have some support in the community, but I wasn’t expecting this kind of overwhelming support from every quarter of the town, I was very humbled,” he said.

According to Preliminary results, Yu received 6,092 votes, good enough for 39.8% of the vote in yesterday’s election.

Yu said his first priority as the new mayor will be to talk with the new City Council to understand their platforms better, as well as working with administration to make a 100 day plan.

“Make sure that some of the urgent files that we need to do before the winter, we’ll get it done, and then move on to next year’s Official Community Plan,” he explained.

“It’s going to need great teamwork, and we have to do it together.”

Yu added he did get a chance to speak with his fellow councillors last night.

“Last night was just an overwhelming feeling of celebration, so we didn’t get into the big details,” he said.

“But the goodwill exchange has been established.”

Yu said he wants to be a ‘triple-A’ mayor.

“I want to be accountable to all, I want to be accessible to all, and I want to be action-oriented mayor,” he explained.

“I want to use these three A’s to guide my behavior in the next four years.”

Yu, along with the rest of the elected council, will be sworn in on November 7th.
