A trip to the Foothills Regional Landfill will cost Prince George area residents a little bit more.
The base tipping fee rate will increase to $96 per tonne starting on January 1st, a two-dollar spike that was approved recently by the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.
Area C Director, Lara Beckett told MyPGNow.com it’s part of a bigger plan to cap the fee to a certain threshold over the next several years.
“Our goal by 2030 is to get to a cap of $110 (per tonne) and so by slowly increasing the tipping fee each year we ease that increase over time.”
“If we dramatically increase the cost all at once, that’s really hard on the taxpayers and the public, and also, a large increase all at once can’t be justified in terms of our operations.”
In short, Beckett believes the gradual increase will be pretty digestible for residents.
“When you are looking at the whole landfill, we’ve got the maintenance, you’ve got the operations of it, contracts, and every year as we operate this facility the costs are increasing. All of these things especially with the cost of living right now from a Regional District standpoint means all of our contracts are costing more, so the tipping fee increase is to help offset all of these costs,” added Beckett.
She adds the $6 minimum charge for loads up to 100 kilograms will not be impacted.
In addition, mixed demolition, land clearing, and construction waste will be charged $192 per tonne, with a minimum fee of twelve bucks in the New Year.
