School District 57 is continuing to face issues surrounding a limited workforce.
“It’s across the board in terms of our organization, and from my knowledge, it’s actually province-wide, we’re not unique,” said SD 57 Superintendent Cindy Heitman.
“There is a workforce issue in education, and it is absolutely amplified in the North.”
In order to combat this shortage, the school district is looking to hire uncertified teachers on-call, casual education assistants, casual employees to support clerical staff, as well as casual custodians.
“We do have quite a large ask right now, we want to have a nice robust casual pool to ensure that we have staff in the places that we need them,” Heitman explained.

“We are looking for parents that are looking to work some casual work while their kids are in school, it could be people that are in school right now looking to work part-time, full-time, or casually as well,” said SD 57 Director of Human Resources Andrea Born.
“We want engaging leaders to come in and work with School District 57 to help support the schools.”
Heitman added these opportunities could be potential launchpads for future careers.
“There’s opportunities for growth and change within our organization,” Heitman explained.
“You can come into our district as a casual teacher on-call, decide, ‘hey, I really want to be a teacher,’ and we’ve got a local university that offers an education program, and there’s a pathway then to becoming a full-time regular teacher in a classroom with your own set of kids.”
