PG Snowmobile Club looking to rebuild after cabin damaged in wind storm

The PG Snowmobile Club is feeling plenty of support after a wind storm late last week caused serious damage to a cabin on the Torpy trail.

“There was a tree that looks like it came down, looks like it mostly just damaged the roof and the sun deck out front,” said PG Snowmobile Club President Kyle Wilson.

“It’s a bit of a shame because we just spent two weekends out there replacing all the feet pillars for it and everything like that to get it up to snuff because they were all rotten over the last few years.”

Wilson added the cabin has been out on the trail for about 25 years.

“It’s never been hit by a tree and we finally start doing some work to it and down comes a tree,” he said.

“We had in total about 30 different people out there over two days at about 12 hours a day, getting up to about 300-400 man-hours of work just over the last couple of weeks.”

The cabin is designed to be a safety and warm-up shelter on the trail.

“It’s an area where people can congregate at the start of the day, and drop off fuel,” Wilson explained.

“There is a wood stove in there, and it’s designed if anything were to happen and they were stranded out there, they could stay in there, stay warm, there’s a rescue sled if need be.”

Wilson said they’re going out on Friday to investigate the full extent of the damage.

“So far we’ve had a few people reach out wanting to help already,” he said.

“The Fernie Snowmobile Club even reached out because the barbeque that was on the porch got crushed, and actually pushed through the sundeck. They want to figure out a way to help donate a new barbeque to our cabin.”

Wilson added PG Snowmobile Club has been happy with the support they have been receiving.
