Cougars come out on top of Winterhawks in shootout thriller

65 minutes was not enough time for the Prince George Cougars and Portland Winterhawks in last night’s (Wednesday) shootout thriller.

Noah Boyko sent the 1,761 fans at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum home stunned as he scored in the shootout to seal the come-from-behind 5-4 win for the Cougars.

(Prince George won the shootout 3-2 after trailing 1-0 and 2-1).

Boyko also added an assist on Carter MacAdams’ goal to open the scoring in the first period.

The shootout would not have been possible without the heroics of Chase Wheatcroft and Ondrej Becher, who scored 49 seconds apart with the Cats trailing 4-2 in the third to tie the game at four.

It was Becher’s best game of the year so far as the Czechian import notched a pair of goals and added an assist.

“I thought the last few games he’s started to step his game up and he can skate with the best of them, especially through the neutral zone,” said Cougars Assistant Coach Carter Rigby on the post-game show on 94.3 The Goat.

“He’s got the hands to either put it in the net like that nice one, top shelf tonight (Wednesday), and also dish it too.”

Ty Young was incredible in net once again, making several ten-bell saves while stopping 36 shots.

“He gives you a chance every night, both goalies in our net, but Younger, the last few starts he’s had, he’s made some very key saves at key times, and that’s what you need out of a goalie,” Rigby said.

Koehn Ziemmer also added an assist to extend his point streak to six games.

Ziemmer is third in WHL scoring with 23 points and fourth in goals with 11.

Marcus Nguyen scored a pair for Portland, earning him First Star honours.

Gabe Klassen and Luke Schelter added a goal each for the Winterhawks as well.

The full boxscore can be found here.

The (7-7) Cougars will continue their five-game road trip with a double-header against the (3-8) Spokane Chiefs Friday and Saturday.

Prince George has moved into second place in the B.C. Division and fifth place in the WHL Western Conference standings.
