Cougars acquire third over-ager forward from Pats

The Prince George Cougars have acquired Cole Dubinsky from the Regina Pats.

Dubinsky will fill the Cougars’ third and final 20-year-old over-ager spot on the roster this season, joining forwards Chase Wheatcroft and Noah Boyko.

All three 20-year-olds are new to the Cats this year.

Dubinsky has seven points so far this season (two goals, five assists).

Last year in 61 games, he scored 20 goals and 29 assists, for 49 points.

He has also played 203 WHL games in his career – the most of any player on the Cougars’ current roster.

Rookie forward Zachary Shantz will be headed to Regina in return, as well as a 2023 third-round pick.

Shantz has played nine WHL games in his career, five last season, and four this season, all with Prince George. He is still looking for his first WHL point.

His time with the Northern Alberta Xtreme in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League indicates that Shantz has offensive potential; last season he scored 57 points in just 28 games with the team.

Dubinsky will join the Cougars on their current road trip, and will wear number 18.

It is unlikely he will arrive in time for this weekend’s doubleheader against the Spokane Chiefs.

The last time the Cougars carried three overaged forwards was in 2017-18 (Jared Bethune, Aaron Boyd, Brogan O’Brien).
