UNBC’s Dr. Margo Greenwood has been appointed to the Canadian Senate.
Today (Thursday), Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that she was named as an independent Senator by Governor General Mary Simon, which fills a vacancy in BC.
Greenwood is internationally recognized, having 30 years of experience focused on the health and well-being of Indigenous children, families, and communities.
She has been employed by UNBC since 1997 and has been a professor in the education program as well as an Academic Leader of the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health.
In June, Greenwood was also appointed as the interim Scientific Director of the Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
“I am honoured to be appointed as a Senator and look forward to contributing to the work of the Senate in an independent and non-partisan way. My contribution to the Senate is grounded in my commitment to the health and well-being of all people, including Indigenous children and families. I’m proud to bring all of my lived experience to this work.”
The Vernon resident is also an Officer of the Order of Canada as well as the recipient of many other distinctions.
