RCMP, ICBC hold shift into winter safe driving campaign on Ospika

Since the snow first fell a week ago, car accidents and collisions have been on the rise.

This afternoon, RCMP, ICBC, YRB, and the Highway Patrol all gathered along Ospika Boulevard outside of the CN Centre to remind drivers of safe driving practices, and hand out wiper fluid and information pamphlets.

“Today is a bit of a nice, friendly reminder,” said Doug MacDonald, ICBC’s North Central Road Safety Manager.

Winter tires, tire pressure, wiper fluid, and giving yourself plenty of time to warm up your car and get where you are going were some of the key points MacDonald was reminding drivers of.

“Unfortunately we have had some very serious crashes and fatalities in the north in the last week,” MacDonald said. “It is a shame when that happens any time of the year, but especially as we get closer to the Christmas season.”

Just this morning, there was a vehicle rollover on Foothills.

“It is about being prepared for the what if’s,” MacDonald added.

“As drivers, we need to adjust our driving habits. That’s something we all can do.”
