David Eby will be sworn in as BC’s 37th premier by Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin.
The ceremony will take place today (Friday) at the Musqueam Community Centre in Vancouver.
Last month, Eby announced a 100-day action plan that focuses on solving issues facing health care, housing, community safety, and climate change.
Eby will introduce his new cabinet on December 7th.
Eby was declared BC NDP leader on October 20th after Anjali Appadurai was disqualified over claims she violated campaign rules.
It was alleged Appadurai “engaged in serious improper conduct” by working with third parties for membership drives on her behalf.
The former attorney general and housing minister will take over from John Horgan, who stepped down following his battle with and recovery from cancer.
Horgan announced in June that after five years on the job, he decided to step down due to health reasons.
Horgan added it was the honour of a lifetime to serve as premier and that he’s offered to try to mediate a settlement over healthcare funding between the provinces and the federal government.
It’s been a gradual rise to the top for Eby after first being elected into the Legislature in 2013, representing Vancouver-Point Grey
Before entering provincial politics, he was the Executive Director of the BC Civil Liberties Association, an adjunct professor of law at the University of British Columbia, president of the HIV/AIDS Legal Network, and served on the Vancouver Foundation’s Health and Social Development Committee.
From July 2017 to the same month this year, Eby was BC’s, Attorney General.
Eby helped spearhead an ICBC reform, where the province cut auto insurance rates by as much as 20% in May of 2021.
Under the new system, BC drivers pay around $1500 on average.
In addition, at-fault drivers will still have their rates raised based on driving habits, and victims are still able to sue criminally responsible drivers.
Eby also spent two years (2020-2022) as the province Housing Minister after Selina Robinson took over the Finance portfolio.
