Herrington’s late game heroics lifts Spruce Kings over Smoke Eaters

John Herrington sent home 1,251 Smoke Eaters fans stunned after scoring the late winner to give the Spruce Kings a 4-3 win in Trail.

Herrington’s late game-winner broke the tie with just 70 seconds left in the game, coming off assists from Austin Fraser and Linden Makow.

It was the 2023 BCHL Allstar’s second of the game, as he scored the Spruce King’s first goal of the night in the second period to tie the game at one.

The Spruce Kings would add two more in the second from Kilian McGregor-Bennett and Luca Primerano, to give them a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame.

Trail proved they would go down easily, as Ridge Dawson and Quinn Disher scored to tie the game at three halfway through the third.

Jordan Fairlie stopped 27 shots in the win.

The win put the Spruce Kings into third in the BCHL’s Interior Division.

The Spruce Kings (12-5-1-1) are tied with the West Kelowna Warriors (12-4-2-0) at 26 points each, but West Kelowna has one game in hand.

The Spruce Kings will have their hands full tonight, as they look to knock off the still undefeated Pentiction Vees (19-0-0-0).
