Meat prices expected to be beefed up over the summer

Expect to shell out a few more dollars for burgers and steaks this year.

Meat prices from retailers show that prices are up between 18-20 percent from last year.

Homesteader Meats Owner Ben Klassen says eight months ago he predicted sides of beef costing four dollars a pound, and currently they are just a few cents below that.

“I don’t foresee any daylight for awhile, because for one thing, there is a shortage of cows and you need the cows to have cows,” says Klassen, “so that takes a few years to get that going.”

Klassen says the spike in meat prices has been predicted for a while.

He says this is due to rancher’s selling off their herds and less and less mother cows producing calves for slaughter.
