T-Wolves outlast Dinos to complete MBB sweep; Calgary dominates UNBC WBB to split weekend set

Basketball is often summed up as a game of runs and in the case of the UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team, they continue to use balance as a key to victory.

During Saturday’s 74-67 win over the Calgary Dinos, the T-Wolves had five players in double-digit scoring to improve to 5-3 heading into the Canada West Christmas Break.

Most notably, it was the big men of Spencer Ledoux and Fareed Shittu who led the way with 16 and 12 points respectively.

Ledoux, a fourth-year player from Kamloops, was 8-for-10 on field goals in 31 minutes of action.

UNBC held a slim 28-27 advantage heading into halftime and the nailbiter continued well into the second half.

A 27-point fourth quarter proved to be the difference maker in the contest as a couple of big threes from Darren Hunter as well as clutch baskets from Micah Jessie propelled the T-Wolves to victory.

For the Dinos, they were led by Noah Wharton who had 18 points in defeat (4-4), stepping up for Aiden Smith who just played three minutes on Saturday after posting a game-high the night prior.

In women’s action, Calgary clapped back with a dominant performance over UNBC coasting to an 81-54 victory at the Northern Sports Centre.

The Dinos (6-2) jumped out to a 20-11 edge and found themselves up by 10 at halftime.

However, the performances of former Timberwolf and Prince George product Madison Landry as well as clutch shooter Annacy Palmer proved too much for UNBC, outscoring them 23-9 in the fourth quarter.

Landry finished the contest with 12 points, while Palmer was 5-for-13 on field goals including a pair of three-pointers.

Eleven out of the 12 Calgary players who suited scored at least two points.

Alina Shakirova had a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort for UNBC.

Both Timberwolf basketball teams are now off until January 6th when they welcome the Manitoba Bisons to the NSC.
