Province adds 56 more $10-a-day daycare spaces to Prince George

The province is continuing to ramp up its $10-a-day daycare program in December, with more than 2,450 new spaces opening up throughout BC.

61 child care centres across BC will be entering the $10-a-day program this month, including two programs in Prince George.

The Montessori Early Learning Centre – based out of Polaris Montessori school in College Heights – will become $10-a-day for their 16 two-and-a-half to kindergarten aged spaces.

The Montessori Child Care Centre on 5th avenue is also becoming $10-a-day, adding 40 spaces – 22 for 2.5 years to kindergarten, and 18 school age.

They will be the third and fourth $10 locations in Prince George, following the two YMCA daycare locations who saw price cuts in the spring.

“We doubled the number of $10-a-day spaces earlier this year and continue our work to nearly double yet again by the end of 2022, with more than 2,450 spaces added this month alone,” said Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Child Care.

“Affordable child care can be life changing, and we’re one step closer to making that a reality for all families in B.C.”

The province says the average cost of full time infant childcare is $1,000 a month, and that these changes could save families $800 on that bill.

“Our governments are making affordable, high-quality, flexible and inclusive child care a reality,” said Karina Gould, federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.

“Through our transformative investments, we remain focused on making life more affordable for families and giving every child the best possible start in life.”
