Three PG First Nations eligible for Drinking Water Settlement compensation

If you were subject to a drinking water advisory that lasted at least one year, you could be eligible for compensation.

Applications have been coming in from First Nations communities across the country, impacted by long-term drinking water advisories between November 20th, 1995 and June 20, 2021.

“We are encouraging individuals to submit a claim for compensation as soon as possible and are offering real support to help them in the process,” says Darian Baskatawang from the Class Counsel.

An online claims assessment tool has been made available, as well as a map of impacted First Nations.

The map says three nations in Prince George are eligible to make a claim, Tsay Keh Dene, Kwadacha, and Takla Lake.

Impacted First Nations can submit a Band Council Acceptance Resolution and receive up to $500,000 from the settlement.

These are just three of hundreds of nations across the country who were subjected to year (or more) long water advisories in the last 26 years.

The First Nations Drinking Water Settlement was approved in court on December 22nd, 2021, and was awarded $8-billion in compensation.

It also came with a commitment to fund construction required to provide Nations, that still do not have it, with reliable and clean water.
