WHL:

Portland Winterhawks  4  Prince George Cougars  2

The Winterhawks broke a 2-2 tie at 5:05 of the third and then added an empty netter.

Both Ethan Sampson and Koehn Ziemmer notched a goal and an assist for Prince George.

Tyler Brennan took the loss in net blocking 33 of 36 shots.

The (14-13) Cougars are 1-2 on a six-game road trip that will continue Friday and Saturday when they play at Tri-City and conclude when they visit Seattle on Tuesday.

Two PG Cougars have been invited to Canada’s world junior selection camp.

Tyler Brennan and Ethan Sampson are among 29 players, including 13 from the WHL, that will attend camp beginning Friday in Moncton, N.B.

Brennan is one of four goalies and Sampson is among nine defencemen looking for a spot on the team.

The IIHF World Junior Championship in Moncton and Halifax begins on Boxing Day with four games, including Canada taking on Czechia.

West Kelowna Warriors  6  Prince George Spruce Kings  3

The Warriors scored four consecutive goals in the first 14 minutes of the second period before 762 fans in West Kelowna.

It was the 4th straight loss for the (13-10-1-1) Spruce Kings who host the (6-16-1-1) Cowichan Valley Capitals Friday night at 7:00.

P.G. is 5th out of nine teams in the Interior Division while Cowichan is last in the Coastal Division and the entire BCHL.

The Penticton Vees lead the league with a perfect 24-0 record.

NHL:  (3 Canadian teams were in action on Wednesday and all won)

Vancouver  6  San Jose  5  (OT)

Elias Pettersson scored at 4:25 of overtime. It was the second straight game that Pettersson tallied the winner in OT.

Vancouver has won three in a row, all in overtime.

The (12-12-3) Canucks host the Minnesota Wild Saturday night at 7:00.

Edmonton  8  Arizona  2

Calgary  5  Minnesota  3

Tage Thompson tied a Buffalo Sabres team record with five goals. He also added an assist in a 9-4 victory over the Blue Jackets in Columbus.

BC Elite Hockey League: (BCEHL)

(Under-18)

The (5-8-1) U18 Cariboo Cougars visit the (7-8-0-1) Valley West Giants on Saturday (11:45 AM) in Delta and Sunday (10 AM) in Langley.

Valley West is 6th and Cariboo is 7th in the 9-team league.

World Cup Soccer:  (in Qatar)

The World Cup quarterfinals begin Friday with Brazil against Croatia (7 AM PT) followed by the Netherlands vs. Argentina (11 AM).

The other two quarters will be played Saturday: Portugal against Morocco (7 AM) and France vs. England (11 AM).

The (13-12) Raptors visit the (6-20) Orlando Magic in a doubleheader Friday (4 PM PT) and Sunday (3 PM).

NFL:

Week 14 of the NFL season kicks off tonight (Thursday at 5:15 PT) with (5-7) Las Vegas at (3-9) LA Rams.

The Raiders have won three straight while the Rams have lost six in a row.

With most teams having five games left, Philadelphia has the best record in the NFC and NFL at 11-1 followed by Minnesota at 10-2.

Buffalo and Kansas City are both 9-3 in the AFC but the Bills are currently the top seed because of their head-to-head victory over the Chiefs.
