Some Christmas cheer will be spread at the Kopar Memorial Arena when the Prince George Spruce Kings take to the ice.
Tonight (Friday), is their Drop the Mits and Sock It to Em game against the Cowichan Valley Capitals, in support of St. Vincent de Paul where fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used winter clothing.
Director of Business Operations, Kyle Anderson explained which items are in high demand.
“The gloves, the toques, the scarves, and another item is socks. That’s one thing that is very key and the fans can bring those in, put them in a plastic bag and when the Spruce Kings score their first goal, they can throw them on the ice.”
Anderson mentioned they will have some special guests to help with the on-ice cleanup when the Spruce Kings score their first goal.
“The PG Minor Hockey Capitals U-13 girls team, which just won a tournament last weekend in Calgary is going to be there, they are going to drop the ceremonial faceoff and hopefully get their skates on in time to pick up those donations. We scored really early last year so we’ll kind of see what happens.”
The game has been a staple since 2003 and Anderson is looking forward to a really healthy crowd after public health restrictions put a damper on festivities the last couple of years.
“It’s such a great community initiative. The Spruce Kings are community-owned and then to support a cause like St. Vincent de Paul is such an important thing for us being in the downtown as well as everyone else throughout this great community.”
Puck drop is at 7 pm.
In addition, the Spruce Kings will be donating $1.00 to St. Vincent de Paul for every fan in attendance.
