A Williams Lake woman sustained non-life threatening injuries after a surprise encounter with a grizzly bear last Friday evening.
Williams Lake Conservation Officer Jeff Tyre says the couple who were hiking in a remote location, did everything right:
“They had bear spray, and the male was armed in this case with a rifle. But it happened so quickly that they all they could do was raise their hands in the air and yell at the bear, wave, and make themselves as large as they could. They did everything right”
Tyre says from his understanding, the wind was blowing very hard, which meant making lots of noise had been ineffective.
Conservation officers are also reminding everyone in the North Central region especially to be bear aware as we head into the Summer months, and to make sure adequate precautions are taken while enjoying the outdoors anywhere in BC.
