Caledonia Nordic Ski Club ready and excited to begin National Nordiq Trials

The best cross-country skiers that Canada has to offer will begin competing for a shot at international competition at the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club tomorrow (Wednesday).

The 2023 Under 23 Nordiq Canada Selection Trials and Nordiq Cup begin tomorrow morning at 9:00 with women’s individual sprints, and Kevin Pettersen, the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club’s Director of Competitions, is confident they are all ready to go.

“Everybody has been just raving about the courses,” Pettersen told My PG Now. “We have an amazing snow base, we are really grateful for what we have.”

He hopes skiers, sports fans, and the interested public will come out to watch the races that will take place from tomorrow until Saturday.

“We have the best cross country skiers from across Canada here,” he said, this week’s winners will represent Canada at international competitions later this winter.

In total, that is 165 skiers – 13 from Prince George.

Canada’s best will not be the only ones in the snow this week, Pettersen said four international junior teams (Poland, Czech Republic, Australia, Estonia) will also be taking part in the competition, getting some extra experience and practice in before next weekend’s World Junior championships in Whistler.

“Those international skiers add that extra level of competition,” he said.

“This is quite something to have in our community… I am just sitting out here and looking at the stadium and it looks immaculate. We are on that world level stage for how we host races… we can really be proud of what we are doing here and we would love to share that with the wider community.”
