A brand new flashing crosswalk has been installed on 18th avenue to improve safety for students walking to class.
It is called a solar-powered rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) and will flash a bright light when someone is crossing the road, prompting oncomming traffic to yield.
“RRFBs give drivers ample visual warning that people are about to cross the street and also make it more they will stop for pedestrians,” said Chris Vliegenthart, the City’s supervisor of transportation services.
“We’re pleased to contribute to these crosswalk improvements to help make the community safer for pedestrians,” said Doug Mac Donald, ICBC’s local road safety coordinator.
“We’ll continue to invest in road improvement projects that help reduce crashes and make our roads safer.”
CNC purchased the beacon for around $17,500, and the city installed it for $12,500.
The city will also be responsible for maintaining the beacon.
A flashy new crosswalk has been installed near CNC – literally! The solar-powered rectangular rapid flashing beacon (say that five times fast) is a partnership between the City, @icbc, and @cnc_bc_ca to improve pedestrian safety.
