Former Cougars’ Captain named Canada West player of the week after scoring championship winner

Josh Maser has a cherry on top of his Canada West title that he earned on Sunday (March 5).

The pride of Houston BC has been named one of the nation’s two players of the week after scoring the championship-winning goal, pushing the Calgary Dinos to a 2-1 win over the Alberta Golden Bears in game three of the best-of-three final.

This earned the Dinos their first Canada West Championship since 1996.

It was Maser’s fourth goal and sixth point in the Dinos’ six-game playoff run.

This included the overtime winner in the first of the three-game championship series against the Alberta Golden Bears.

Fellow Cougars alumni Tyson Upper scored the Dinos’ other goal in the game.

Maser scored 9 goals and 19 points in the regular season for Calgary, who carried a very impressive 25-3 record this season, earning themselves the title of Canada’s top rated team.

They will compete for the national championship in Charlottetown later this month.

Maser wore the “C” for the Cougars in 2019-20, where he tallied 29 goals and 48 points in 62 games played.

He spent his entire four-year WHL career with the Cats. After brief stints in the AHL and ECHL Maser has played for the University of Calgary for the past two seasons.
