World Baseball Classic: (in Phoenix)

Jared Young of Prince George, the DH for the Canadian team, went 1-for-3 that included a homer for the only Canadian RBI.

In two games in the tournament, the 27-year-old Young is 1-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs.

Canada is 1-1 (won its opener 18-8 over Great Britain) and continues round-robin play against Colombia today (Tuesday noon PT) and Mexico Wednesday (11 AM) in Phoenix.

Quarterfinals go Friday, and Saturday with the semis on Sunday and Monday with the final on Tuesday (March 21st) in Miami (4 pm PT).

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars have five regular season games remaining, three of them on home ice this week.

The (33-24-6) Cougars entertain the Kelowna Rockets Wednesday and the Victoria Royals Friday and Saturday.

Prince George is 7-0 against Victoria this season, having outscored the Royals by a total of 46-17.

P.G. is 4th in the Western Conference, six points ahead of the (29-26-5-3) Tri-City Americans and seven in front of the (31-29-2-1) Everett Silvertips.

Tri-City and Everett also have five games left.

The Cougars are coming off a four-game road trip where they went 3-0-1.

They whipped Kelowna 6-2 on Wednesday, dumped Victoria 8-3 Friday and 6-3 Saturday, and then lost in overtime 3-2 to the Vancouver Giants in Langley.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings are down to their final four games prior to playoffs.

The (25-20-4-1) Spruce Kings host the (26-17-4-2) Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Friday and Saturday before closing out their regular season with a doubleheader in Cranbrook against the (34-13-1-2) Bucks on March 24th and 25th.

Prince George is 5th in the 9-team Interior Division, one point behind West Kelowna, three back of Salmon Arm and just one ahead of Vernon, and two in front of Wenatchee.

Cranbrook has clinched second behind the (45-3-0-1) Penticton Vees.

On the weekend, the Spruce Kings lost 2-1 Saturday in Vernon.

High School Basketball:

A number of Prince George and Vanderhoof teams had their basketball season come to an end at the provincial high school basketball championships in Langley.

Cedars Christian was named the most sportsmanlike team and tied for 5th (with a 2-1 record) out of 16 in 1A Boys.

Ryan Crosina of Cedars Christian was named to the second all-star team.

Northside Christian of Vanderhoof ended up 15th (1-3 record with the win in its last game).

In other results:

College Heights finished 8th (1-3 record) in 3A Boys.

Gaurev Bains of College Heights was selected to the second all-star team.

Nechako Valley placed 15th (1-3 record with the victory in its last game) in 2A Boys,

PGSS was 15th (1-3 record with the victory in its last game) in 4A Boys.

 

NBA:

The (32-36) Toronto Raptors start a 3-game homestand tonight (4:30 PT) against the Western Conference-leading (46-22) Denver Nuggets.

The Raptors are 9th in the Eastern Conference.

Curling:

Brad Gushue (Team Canada) and his rink from St. John’s, Nfld. will represent Canada at the World Men’s Curling Championship from April 1st to 9th in Ottawa.

The Gushue team won the Tim Hortons for the fifth time in the last seven years.

Gushue beat Matt Dunstone of Manitoba 7-5 in the Canadian men’s curling championship final in London, Ontario.

Gushue’s five Brier Tankards is the most won by a skip.
