Two international world para ski championships one year away from Prince George

In under a year, Prince George will be welcoming the world to the FIS Para Biathlon World Championships and the FIS Para Nordic World Cup Finals.

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club celebrated the occasion yesterday, around 100 people gathered outside the main clubhouse to recognize the importance of the events.

“We have worked very, very hard to make sure Prince George becomes another destination for world championship,” Kevin Pettersen, Chair of the local organizing committee, told My PG Now after the event.

Petterson, Lheidli T’enneh chief Dolleen Logan, Brian McKeever, Canada’s most decorated winter Paralympian with 20 medals, and Natalie Wilkie, Paralympic Gold medallist and World Champion all spoke to the crowd about the upcoming events.

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club held para nordic world championship events in 2019, and Pettersen said they are excited to have them back so soon.

In a release, the club estimates 20-25 countries will be attending, broadcasting to 1-2 million viewers worldwide.

They also estimate a $7 million dollar economic impact from these events – $5 million within Prince George.

“We ask for people to come out here and support the events we do,” Pettersen said. “The Canadian team is one of the best in the world and we will have such an amazing ability to pump them up with our hometown energy and spirit.”
