23-year city councilor Murry Krause awarded Freedom of City

After over two decades spent on city council, Murry Krause returned to the chambers one more time tonight (Monday).

He was awarded Prince George’s Freedom of the City, the highest honor the city can bestow, for his 23 years of service on council and in the community.

After receiving the award, Krause said he was first told he would be receiving the award on Christmas day. “I have never quite received a Christmas gift like that before,” he laughed.

Krause thanked the city, his friends and family, and everyone he has worked with for the award.

He closed by adding “I really am enjoying retirement.”

Mayor Simon Yu, who never served with Krause, told the council gallery if his legacy could halfway measure up to Krause’s, he would be honoured.

“By presenting him with the Order of the City, we ensure Murry’s dedication to social activism and advocacy for the last four decades will inspire present and future generations to greater heights,” Yu said.

Krause is the second former member of city hall to receive the order this year, former Mayor Lyn Hall was also given the honor in February.
Hall was present to congratulate Krause on the achievement.
