Volunteer Prince George looking to grow volunteer base

April 16th to 22nd is National Volunteer Week, and the City of Prince George is getting into the spirit.

Outside of City Hall this morning (Monday), Mayor Simon Yu proclaimed National Volunteer Week, and Volunteer Prince George’s Flag was raised.

Volunteer Prince George helps connect people who want to volunteer with about 50 organizations in the city and has been doing so in the community for over 30 years.

“If there is someone who wants to volunteer, we connect them, depending on what their passion is with the organizations in Prince George,” said Nadine Fieber, Chair of the Volunteer Prince George Board.

Fieber noted Prince George has previously been named Canada’s National Volunteer City.

“We want to get back there because COVID-19 actually put a big dent in volunteer numbers,” she said.

“We don’t have concrete numbers, but we are still up there in the numbers in whole Canada that we have one of the biggest numbers.”

Fieber noted they’re also working on a Prince George-focused app that will help track volunteer hours with local organizations and developing a volunteer data base.

She said they can’t say too much yet about the app as they’re looking for grant funding, but they’re hopeful they’ll have it next year.
