Provincial grant helping Caledonia Nordic Ski Club pave the way

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club is receiving a big boost in funding from the provincial government for a project they’ve been pursuing for some time.

Through the Destination Development fund, the club is receiving $1 million to fund a paved roller ski trail.

“The whole idea for paved trails is so that we can host competitions like we do in the winter in the summertime,” said Club Chair of Competitions Kevin Pettersen.

“It gives us two more seasons to be able to provide that experience.”

Pettersen noted this has been a part of their strategic plan since before the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

He added the $1 million will cover around three kilometres of trail.

“What we’ve submitted for is to cover the biathlon area, so the shooting ramp, the stadium areas for start and finish and the penalty loop, and then two kilometres of paved trails outside of the stadium areas,” Pettersen explained.

“For roller skiing, that’s a really good distance, of course for longer distances you do multiple loops, but there’s also opportunity for shorter distances such as sprint loops or easier training kind of loops.”

Pettersen said the planning and design will happen this year, with construction taking place in the Summer and Fall of next year.

Other groups receiving funding in and around Prince George include:

  • Association of Caledonia TrailBuilders – Tabor Mountain trail development – $300,000
  • Fort St. James Ski Club Society – Interpretive enhancement of Murray Ridge trails – $458,000
  • Prince George Backcountry Recreation Society – Replacement of Grizzly Den Backcountry Cabin – $241,050
  • Prince George Cycling Club – Pidherny Trails Revitalization – $200,000
