One arrested after incident with a knife at Vanderhoof hotel

One person is in custody after an assault with a weapon at a Vanderhoof hotel.

The Vanderhoof RCMP were called to the North Country Inn on Burrard Street yesterday (Tuesday), on a report that an intoxicated man had threatened staff with a knife.

According to police, the man had been heard yelling at people in the parking lot from his room door.

The staff had told him to return to his room, which he did at first, but he was yelling at people again.

Police said when told to go back to his room again, the man approached the staff member while brandishing a knife, pointing it at the staff member.

When police arrived, the suspect reportedly pointed the knife at the officer, and wouldn’t comply with the officer’s demands.

Police say continuous attempts were made to de-escalate the situation while establishing containment until other officers and a negotiator arrived.

According to police, the man continued to disobey police direction, and walked towards police with the knife.

Mounties said they deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon, and the man was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was taken into hospital for medical treatment, and was later released for a bail hearing today. (Wednesday)

“This situation could have ended much differently,” said Cpl. Jeffrey Lance.

“The safety of everyone is our priority, and thankfully no innocent people were injured.”
