School board unanimously passes anti-discrimination and anti-racism policies

After deferring the approval of the policies in February to a later date, SD57’s board of trustees unanimously signed off on anti-discrimination, anti-racism, and reconciliation-focused policies 23 and 24 on Tuesday’s (April 25) board meeting.

The policies aim to provide a safe environment for all students in the district while acknowledging racism and discrimination do exist.

Policy 23 states “The District is committed to creating safe, caring inclusive schools where all learners, staff and community members feel their identities are affirmed and valued through education and restorative practices.”

These policies were passed very soon after the disruption from members of the public, who were against provincial SOGI policies, forced the board to briefly clear the room and take a recess.

Voting to pass the policy was non-unanimously postponed at February’s meeting by trustees who requested more time to review and make changes. It was originally set to be re-visited in June.
