PG’s labour force has shrunk by 4,000 in the past 12 months

Prince George’s unemployment rate climbed by over a full point in April, now sitting at 7.3%.

This comes after it was 6.2 in March.

According to Stats Canada, the local labour force has shrunk over the past 12 months as just over 49-thousand people were employed last month – a dip from 53-thousand in April of 2022.

Labour Division Analyst, Vince Ferrao explained to Vista Radio which sectors were hardest hit.

“There were fewer people working in wholesale and retail and also fewer people working in manufacturing and construction.”

Provincially, BC’s unemployment rate stands at an even 5.0% after it was 4.5 in March – the fourth-lowest among all the provinces.

For the fifth consecutive month, the jobless mark in Canada came in at 5.0% after adding 41-thousand jobs in April.
