WHL:  

The Prince George Cougars selected five forwards, five defencemen and a goalie in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.

Six of those players are from Alberta, three from Saskatchewan and one each from B.C. and Manitoba.

The Cougars’ first-round pick, 15th overall, was defenceman Carson Carels of Manitoba.

None of the 232 players (128 forwards, 88 defencemen, and 16 goalies) selected in the Draft are from Prince George.

Alberta led all provincial branches with 93 players chosen followed by B.C. with 50, Saskatchewan with 44 and Manitoba with 38.

The Seattle Thunderbirds selected three players from Williams Lake, one each in rounds 4, 6 and 11.

The WHL Championship Series with open with games tonight (Friday) and Saturday as the Seattle Thunderbirds visit the Winnipeg Ice.

It will be a 2-3-2 format with games in Kent, Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday and if needed on Friday, May 19th.

There are a total of 17 NHL-drafted players that will participate in the series, 10 with Seattle and 7 with Winnipeg.

The Stars lead 3-2 with Game 6 Saturday (4 PM PT) in Seattle.

OT: Carolina  3  New Jersey  2

Jesper Fast scored on a Power Play at 7:09 of overtime. The Hurricanes won the series 4-1 to advance to the Eastern Conference Final.

There are a pair of Stanley Cup playoff games tonight (Friday): Florida at Toronto (4:00 PT) followed by Edmonton at Vegas (7:00). The Panthers lead the Maple Leafs 3-1 while the Golden Knights and Oilers are tied 2-2.

NBA: (6th games in the best-of-7 Conference semifinals)

Denver  125  Phoenix  100

Nuggets won the series 4-2 to advance to the Western Conference Final.

Boston  95  Philadelphia  86

The series is tied 3-3 with a 7th and deciding game Sunday in Boston.

There are two NBA playoff games tonight (Friday): New York at Miami (4:30 PT) and Golden State at LA Lakers (7:00). The Heat and Lakers both lead their series 3-2.

Major League Baseball:

The (21-16) Toronto Blue Jays will start a 10-game homestand tonight (Friday 4:07 PM PT) against the (25-12) Atlanta Braves.

This weekend in PG Senior Lacrosse, Mackenzie will host the PG Assault Saturday night at 8 and Sunday morning at 11.

The next game in Prince George will go Monday night at 8:00 featuring the Devils and the Bandits.

More public employees in the Prince George area could be striking soon. As of noon today (Wednesday), CUPE 1699, representing employees of the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has issued 72-hour strike notice.
