Pineview VFD seeks new members

The Pineview Volunteer Fire Department is putting out the call for new recruits.

Volunteers don’t need any prior training, but must complete a criminal background check.

With the surge in wildfires around BC, new trainees are needed more than ever.

“This year we’ve had a large volume of calls,” says Fire Chief Lyle Wood, “Our average calls are around 120 per year, and right now we’re sitting around 113 calls.”

The job description isn’t limited to fire-fighting.

Training includes first aid, medical, auto extrication, and shore rescue.

Wood says the average volunteer lasts around five years, but for many, the connection runs deep.

“I’ve lived in Pineview all my life,” explains Wood, “In the early 70’s our house burnt down and they were there for us… And now I’m here for the rest of our community.”

Wood recently received his 30-year citation, while Captain Ken Schinkel and Deputy Chief Lorne Koch received their 20-year citations.

Anyone interested in joining should call or contact their local detachment.

People living in Prince George can join one of several VFDs in the area, or the PG Regional Highway Rescue Society.
