Local State of Emergency has been declared in Wells

A washout on Sugar Creek Road has led to a declaration of a local state of emergency in Wells.

Map of impacted area (provided by Ed Coleman)

Mayor Ed Coleman issued it at 1:42 this (Thursday) afternoon.

“There is a family isolated on the other side so we’re doing that so we can get the road corrected and it also enables any helicopter assistance to them if they had a health issue or otherwise. But they are sheltering in place, they had everything they need.”

Coleman says they are working with Emergency Management BC’s Northern division.

We asked him how long he thinks it will take to repair the road.

“It should be immediate.  You have seven days and if it’s not done within 7 days, then I have to ask the Minister to extend it.”

Coleman says declaring a local state of emergency enables every agency that is responsibile for that road to do the work and they will be paid by emergency funds.
