PG basketball player to join Team Canada at Special Olympics World Games

Prince George will have representation at the Special Olympics World Games.

Malachy Stewart of Prince George will be joining Team Canada’s Special Olympics Basketball team in Berlin in June.

“I’m pretty stoked, it’s the chance of a lifetime,” Stewart said.

“I just feel super, super lucky to be on this team and to play for Team Canada and to go to Berlin is exciting.”

Stewart tried out for the team in May of last year, and heard back in September that he was picked for the team.

To get prepared for the games, Stewart said he’s working out four times a week and playing basketball three times a week.

“On Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays I play basketball, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays I’m just working out,” he explained.

“I’m just getting myself mentally prepared each night and focusing on that goal and just never letting it go.”

Other than the basketball itself, Stewart said he’s looking forward to going on the adventure of a lifetime.

“This is something I’ll never forget, and always look back at for the rest of my life and I’m just so excited.”

The Special Olympics World summer games will be held in Berlin from June 17-25th.
