The proposed Rotary Destination Park will make its way back to the council table at tomorrow’s (Monday) Prince George City Council meeting.
Discussions on the “Mega Park” were deferred during the December 19th meeting when City Council received a Life Cycle Cost Analysis.
According to the Life Cycle Cost Analysis, the proposed park would cost $68,275,688 over a 50-year life span, which is $1,365,513 per year over that time frame.
“Whenever we’re considering projects, be they mega projects or smaller projects, it is exciting, and it’s important we look into them,” said Councillor Garth Frizzell at the December 19th meeting.
“But this sober second thought is what we also need to consider. There’s always a trade-off in government when we’re making decisions like this.”
At that time, the current City Council was still fairly new.
The Mega Park project was first introduced into the community back in February 2022, when it was announced that proceeds from a Mega 50/50 Jackpot at a Cougars game would go towards funding the park.
The proposed park would have a splash park, playgrounds, sitting areas, and a pump track, which would be the first pump track in Prince George.
At tomorrow’s meeting, city staff are recommending council proceed with one of three options:
- That Council directs Administration to provide further information, which is specified by Council, regarding the Mega Park project.
- That Council suspends further action by Administration on the Mega Park project.
- That Council Directs Administration to proceed with the next step in the Mega Park project by formalizing an agreement with the Community Foundation and Rotary Club, including preparation of a Stage Gate Review Process in accordance with the Council approved Organizational Capital Project Management manual.
Other items to be discussed at tomorrow’s meeting include proposed apartment buildings in College Heights, and a building permit summary for the month of May.
