Proposed housing developments in College Heights moving onto public hearings

Proposals to potentially bring over 1,400 new units of housing to College Heights will go to public hearings.

At last night’s (Monday) meeting, City Council voted to give first and second readings to bylaws that would rezone four properties in College Heights.

Those properties are located at 6700 Southridge Avenue, a portion of 6100 O’Grady Road, 5958 Stringer Crescent, and 5743 Nicholas Avenue.

The projects were laid out in a 694 page report.

Councillor Cori Ramsay said she would like to see a neighbourhood plan, which she felt wasn’t included in the report.

“I would perhaps argue that this isn’t just affecting the acres included for development, but it’s including the entire neighbourhood,” Ramsay said.

“Without that neighbourhood plan, it’s really hard, we can look to the OCP, but it’s outdated.”

Troika Developments would develop the parcels labelled 2, 3, and 4 in the image at the top of this article, while Bic Hayer Rental Properties would develop the parcel labelled 1.

Council voted in favour of holding public hearings for each of the applications.

They noted that because of the scope of the projects and correspondence already received, perhaps a special meeting could be held to facilitate the public hearings.

“I like the idea of a separate meeting, I really like that approach, and I think it’s that important that it warrants it,” said Councillor Ron Polillo.

“Obviously there is an incredible amount of input and engagement and feedback.”
