Trio of Prince George dancers selected for international festival in France

Only 120 dancers worldwide made the cut for the French dance festival “Camping,” three are from Prince George.

Laura Buchanan, Shayle Dyble, Sloane Zogas, and Method Dance Society’s Artistic Director, Shelby Richardson, will board a plane for France later this week.

Camping, put on by the Centre National de la Danse in Lyon, is a “platform and forum for dancers and choreographers from around the world to learn from leading contemporary dance practitioners globally,” according to Richardson.

Some of these world leaders include Katerina Andreou, Christian Rizzo, Emmanuelle Huynh, and Marco Berrettini.

Richardson told My PG Now it feels “really, really wonderful” to be picked to fill three of the 120 open spots this year.

“A large part of what Method has done is try to get northern artists recognized for their talents and contributions to the arts on a provincial, regional, and national level,” she explained. “This really demonstrates that the work northern artists are doing is just as valuable as the work others are doing in urban centres across the country.”

She said a day in the camping life will include:

  • A morning workshop with all attendees, lead by a different professional every day.
  • Professional development
  • Skill building
  • Smaller workshops
  • Dedicated smaller group time with your assigned world class facilitator

The festival will last for five days from June 19-23, and will end with a Friday performance.

“We have been working for three years trying to build up our profile in the greater contemporary dance discourse,” Richardson said, adding the three dancers going have all been a part of the Method studio since it started three years ago. “It has been years in the making, getting to this level of recognition.”

A little over a month after they return, Richardson said Method is holding their own workshop on contemporary dance and choreograph training.

It will run on August 14 and 15 at the Knox Performance Centre. For more information, click here.
