Canada’s first renewable diesel refinery will soon begin production in Prince George

Prince George is home to the first renewable diesel refinery in Canada.

The Tidewater Renewables refinery has completed construction and will soon begin production.

“It’s an exciting day for Prince George, it’s an exciting day for Tidewater Renewables, and it’s an exciting day for all the province,” said Premier David Eby.

“BC is a leader in global transition away from fossil fuels, and towards cleaner, renewable fuels, like the low-carbon diesel that will be produced right here at Tidewater in Prince George.”

Using bio-feedstocks such as canola, tallow, and tall oil, the new facility will produce renewable diesel which offers an 80 to 90 percent reduction in carbon emissions compared to fossil fuel diesel.

“Once in operation, we’re going to produce 170 million litres annually of arctic spec renewable diesel,” said Rob Colcleugh, Chairman and CEO of Tidewater Renewables.

“This first Canadian renewable diesel facility is a great milestone for our company, for the province of British Columbia, as well as for Canada.”

“This project will put Prince George on the map,” said Mayor Simon Yu.

“Renewable diesel first, then renewable jet fuel after. I’m sure there will be many other projects to come, and we’re excited as a city to see this project come to its fulfillment.”

The $380 million facility was build with support from the provincial government through the Province’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard.
