The preliminary results are in for School District 57’s by-election, and Prince George has chosen Sarah Holland and Shar McCrory to be their two new trustees.
Holland received 1,590 votes, while McCrory received 1,384.
Holland said it was quite a bit of relief when the preliminary results were revealed last night.
“I’m looking forward to working for the betterment of the district,” Holland said.
“I’m looking forward to working with the other members of the board, I’ve talked with all of them so far, and received some positive feedback from them. I’m looking forward to working with the partner groups and our rights holders.”
McCrory said she’s excited, and ready for the task at hand.
“The board of education works as one unit, what I will be working on first and foremost is building those relationships with the other trustees that are on the board already, and working with them for the common better of the district,” McCrory said.
“Myself personally, what I’m going to work hard at initially is building relationships, learning about everyone who is part of the school district, and working forward to help improve student’s achievements.”
Holland and McCrory will have to hit the ground running, as the school board’s next meeting is on June 27.
Both said their understanding is they will be sworn in at that meeting.
A big part of the June 27th meeting will be finalizing the school district’s budget, and making it a balanced budget.
“We have to look at how best to make cuts that need to happen in the budget that are the furthest away from students as much as possible,” McCrory said.
“That’s what I’ll be looking at this week, is really reviewing the budget as it stands now, and seeing what we can do with that, and looking for making some suggestions moving forward.”
“I’m going to be very interested to talk with the board or the secretary treasurer about what the options are at this point,” Holland said.
“The budget needs to be into the Ministry of Education at the end of June, a balanced budget, so there’s not a lot of scope for adjustments at this meeting I would assume.”
At least 2,494 people came out to vote in the election, with 4,988 votes cast.
