Three days of festivities planned for National Indigenous Peoples Day this week

Today (June 21) is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Prince George’s festivities will be stretched across three days.

Entertainment, food, music, and other activities will be available for everyone at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park today and tomorrow from 11:00 am – 8:00 pm on both days.

The Omineca Arts Centre will be hosting the final portion of the celebration on Friday (June 23), which will feature workshops, live entertainment, an open mic and more, from noon until midnight.

“It is a bunch of groups coming together, which is one of those Indigenous ways of doing things – collaborating and bringing people together,” Lheidli T’enneh Councillor Joshua Seymour told My PG Now.

“It is called National Indigenous Peoples Day, but that is just the theme,” he said. “we are inviting everybody from all walks of life, whether you are non-Indigenous, whether you belong to whatever faith, we want everybody to come out and join us on that day and learn about the local culture.”

Seymour explained the importance of the day by saying it helped “identify who we are,” saying Indigenous people have been given many names – Indians, Natives, Aboriginals, First Nations, before Indigenous.

“There is so much power in a name,” he said, “calling it National Indigenous Peoples Day gives an opportunity for people to reclaim who they are, but also to invite the larger community to come celebrate with us in our cultural ways.”
