School board will pass 2023/24 budget Tuesday, $777,000 cut to district admin proposed

Tuesday is School District 57’s final board meeting of the 2022/23 school year.

The largest item on the itinerary is finalizing the budget for the 2023/24 year. At last month’s meeting it was revealed the district is facing a $2,359,303 million dollar deficit.

The budget draft that the board will be voting on proposes $1,780,261 of that deficit will be made up for with cost reductions, while the rest will be taken out of Operating Surplus.

Within that $1.7 million in cuts, $777,020 is set to be taken out of District Administration – representing a 12.18% reduction.

Instruction is taking the second largest proposed hit at $690,239, but this only makes up half a percent of the total instruction budget.

Operations and Maintenance and Transportation and Housing could also be seeing smaller cuts.

The District Administration cuts are broken down into Education Administration, $592,100, and Business Administration, $184,920, as seen below.

Whether or not there is any discussion surrounding these changes, the budget needs to be passed on Tuesday.

You can find the full budget report on page 135 of this PDF.

This will surely be a heavy first meeting for two new trustees, Sarah Holland and Shar McCrory, who were elected last week in the district by-election.

They will both be sworn in to their positions at the start of Tuesday’s meeting.

After Tuesday, the school board will not meet again publicly until next school year.
